Where we are?
HIPOCAMPUS will be launched in 2016 in Mexico where more than 6 million of CHILDREN with les that 5 years old live in poverty and DO NOT have access to quality care and education services
In Mexico, there are 11 million of children with less than 5 years old, 56% of them live in poverty. Current public offer of childcare services is highly insufficient and pre-schools schedules are not adapted to the current reality of the communities Additionally, 80% of children in Mexico are under the exclusive care of the mother, up to 80% earn less than 6 minimum wages and 91.4% have no access to social security.
Hipocampus offers a simple solution: increase access of high-quality services and programs that improve the learning of children in Mexico. To achieve this, we will establish and operate learning centers focused on at-risk children from 2 to 6 years old. However, establishing centers and providing services is not enough to increase access. In order to truly serve the most vulnerable children, we will provide these services at very affordable prices. The fees collected will be deployed towards the costs of running the centers and the salaries of teachers. The fee varies by program and the goal is to make each of these centers self-sustaining. The secondary focus will be providing livelihood opportunities empowering local women through recruitment, training and deployment as ‘edupreneurs’ in the centers.
Hipocampus has secured seed capital, a co-founding team committed with the project and will open its first centre at the end of August 2016.
